Submitted by ub on

The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said today the agency will temporarily halt some activities owing to the $65 million budget shortfall resulting from the United States’ decision to withhold its dues, and launched a new online tool to enable donors to help offset the loss.

The new fund is one of several measures announced by Director-General Irina Bokova in an address to the 36th session of UNESCO’s General Conference that ended today in Paris.

“Women are the world's silent majority. We do not, for the most part, start wars and hoard resources … However, we earn 10% of the world's income and own 1% of the property. Our wages are roughly 17% lower than men's. Something has to change, and soon.”
--Leila Janah on Equality

Submitted by ub on

Make a bet, a wish, begin a new friendship, or just do something nice for someone at 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011. All over the world, many people are planning to mark the triple convergence of 11s, hoping it will bring them good fortune or at least try something new. I plan to buy 11 lottery tickets (each, of course, including the number 11). At precisely at 11:11 a.m...

Some folks seem to think that on 11/11 magic will happen, things may come true, it could happen to you, or me, or all of US.

City Island and communities all around this great country are honoring the brave men and women who have served this wonderful nation in times of war and peace. Through public ceremonies, parades, and celebrations or private prayers and reflection, Americans will make known their gratitude to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

This is also a reminder that honoring our veterans shouldn't be limited to just once. The enormous sacrifice they and their families make deserves to be recognized throughout the year.
