The Good Old Days

A Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age.

Measured as an idealist, he has been a military man and seen terrible things. He learns that the world is generally harsh and unforgiving.

The message is of hope and chivalry. To Dream, the Impossible Dream is undoubtedly the best known and represents the ideals of the gentleman as well as the knight.

The City Island Nautical Museum presents The Rosenfeld Collection. This is the largest single collection of maritime photography in the world, and although it is housed at Mystic Seaport, the photographers who created it lived and worked on City Island in The Bronx.

Morris Rosenfeld and his sons helped define maritime art photography. Their images of sailboats, steam yachts, naval vessels, powerboat races, leisure activities, and every America’s Cup Race from 1885 to 1992 are world famous.

This exhibition will feature images of the most beautiful boats created or worked on at the island’s yacht yards, including Dorade, Brilliant, Bolero, and several successful defenders of the America’s Cup. In addition to sailing images, there will be photographs of boat construction and launchings, many of them original prints in the Nautical Museum’s collection, and a unique slide show created by curator Thomas Nye.

As a special feature of the Rosenfeld exhibition on view at the Nautical Museum, curator Tom Nye created this presentation celebrating City Island.
