NYC and Shanghai

NYC, USA and Shanghai, PRC like many major metropolitan areas and world class cities, they have some things in common. Huge populations, massive skyscrapers, affordable public transportation, fantastic food, terrific tourism attractions, etc.

Since I have just returned from yet another trip to Asia please allow me this opportunity to point out some differences and similarities, in order to expose the individuality of each. What no one can deny is the vibrancy and character each one of these massive cities.

Laowai in a strange land

Laowai means stranger, or an outsider in the Chinese, Mandarin language. The term is usually and generally used to refer to Westerners or whitey, Latinos, Arabs, Africans, or utilized interchangeably to denote all non-Asian foreigners.

As with the Spanish term Gringo, I'm told that being called a Laowai is not an offensive term. So as I travel throughout China, I have come to accept the fact that my round eyes and excess hair is an easy target to attract this label.

Worldwide leaders and thousands of New Yorkers stood up for climate change now is The People's Climate March in New York City on Sunday.

Marches also took place in Paris, London and many other cities around the world. Celebrities attended these events as well. The march was scheduled days before world leaders convene at the U.N. headquarters to discuss climate change.

ITS A BIG FAT WORLD

Nearly one third of the people on earth are considered overweight. There is no country in the world where people have avoided obesity rates and the trend has been tracked for over thirty years.

There is a fat chance that either you, or someone you know is obese. In fact more than 2 billion people are now overweight. The highest overweight areas are found in the midsections of the body, so it goes to show that the top culprits are the Middle East and North Africa. Here nearly 60 percent of men and 65 percent of women are fatties.

BOROUGH PRESIDENT DIAZ ISSUES NEGATIVE ULURP RECOMMENDATION ON CITY ISLAND BRIDGE

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has issued a negative recommendation on the proposed construction of a new City Island Bridge. The recommendations come as part of the borough president’s charter mandated responsibilities in the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).

SOUNDVIEW FERRY?

History clearly attributes the profound success of New York City to its ports and waterways. Rediscovering and reinventing how these same assets can be used today is what I believe this ferry service proposal represents. This proposal deserves to be tested, and it is my hope that, in partnership with your office, we can make this pilot program a reality, writes Borough President Diaz in his letter to Mayor de Blasio. Some other elected officials and organizations are joining Diaz to support the three-year pilot proposal.
