Crowley to visit South Asia

US Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) announced he will travel to Burma Jan. 12-13, making him the first member of the House of Representatives to officially travel to Burma in over 12 years. Crowley, who serves as co-chair of the House Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, will also visit India between Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 as part of a congressional delegation.

While in Burma, Crowley is expected to meet with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and ethnic minority leaders, as well as government leaders.

Many residents in the Bronx community are saddened to learn about last night’s incident on Creston Avenue in Fordham Heights, where eleven-year old Ryan Aguari fell victim to gun violence and is now fighting for his life. This is the second time in two months a child has fallen victim to gun violence in The Bronx.

Independent Democratic Conference Releases 2012 Legislative Agenda

The Independent Democratic Conference released its 2012
legislative agenda Thursday aimed at strengthening New York's economy,
improving the lives of New York residents, and preserving New York's progressive
tradition.

The agenda was released on the anniversary of the IDC's formation and
after a successful year that saw many of the conference's 2011
priorities made into law.

The IDC's 2012 agenda includes:

A significant number of homeless people in Southern California are increasingly relying on shelters as a safe place to sleep after the separate stabbing deaths of three homeless men. Public safety authorities say they suspect there is a serial killer stalking the homeless.

As previously announced on City Island Images, in order to conduct an upgrade to our 24/7 on-line news and information service pack, the system must be shut down starting TODAY, and may be unavailable throughout these holidays.

It is possible these upgrades will be completed early, but City Island Images cannot guarantee this. If the upgrade is completed earlier than expected, we will be delighted to continue our services system-wide.

Service pack 24/7 is a maintenance upgrade that includes bug fixes and latest browser compatibilities.

Fair Wages for New Yorkers

A Quinnipiac University Poll just released shows that New Yorkers of all political leanings support a “living wage.” Voters polled by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said that the “Fair Wages for New Yorkers” Act, which is currently before the New York City Council, is a “good idea” by a wide margin of 74-19 percent.

The poll also found support strong for the bill across the political spectrum, with support for the bill among Republicans at 56-39 percent, among Democrats at 83-11 percent and among independents at 67-25 percent.
