Heat domes, like the one sending temperatures soaring from the Midwest to New England and across the eastern U.S. in 2024, occur when a persistent region of high pressure traps heat over an area. A heat dome can linger for days to weeks, leaving the people, crops and animals below to suffer through stagnant, hot air that can feel like an oven.

The International Oceans' record heat streak had reached a 13-month high and getting hotter, according to published reports.

"Whilst temperature variations associated with natural cycles like El Niño come and go, the extra energy trapped into the ocean and the atmosphere by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases will keep pushing the global temperature towards new records," Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service
