The January 6 prisoners in jail are there for violently assaulting our officers, destroying federal property, blocking the peaceful transfer of power, and seditious conspiracy—conspiring to overthrow the government. Most of them pleaded guilty and the rest were convicted by juries of their peers.
A hostage is someone illegally abducted and held for financial or political ransom.

It would have been democratic if they offered an opportunity for all Americans to provide feedback and seriously consider everyone’s concerns. I’m not optimistic the cult will ever willingly decide to change their priorities and focus as much on democracy as they do on total control and unparalleled power. He is only concerned with making money and fitting as many folks into temporary holding camps before deporting or executing the millions of US citizens who dissent.
The asymmetry is that of course the American legal system is not a tactic. A trial is built on tactical decisions. The American legal system is a search for truth, facticity, conclusion, and resolution. When legal systems are working, they are excavations of what happened and why. One of the reasons Trump has managed to evade legal accountability throughout his lifetime is that he doesn’t allow the legal system to look backward, he disputes facts literally as they are happening, and continues to break the law while delaying and denying.
