BBC ON FIRE?

Has a story about Donald Trump tarnished the world-famous British Broadcasting Corporation?

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public-service broadcaster headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, England, and originally established in 1922 as the British Broadcasting.

  • The outgoing BBC director general tells staff to "fight for our journalism", a day after US President Donald Trump threatened to sue the corporation for $1bn
  • Tim Davie and BBC chair Samir Shah spoke to staff for 40 minutes - Davie acknowledged a "mistake" in how Panorama edited a Trump speech, but didn't directly refer to his legal threat
  • Davie and head of news Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday, after days of pressure sparked by a leaked memo
  • The memo - written by ex-BBC adviser Michael Prescott - made a series of claims, including that Panorama misrepresented Trump's speech from 6 January, 2021
  • On Monday, Shah apologised for Panorama's "error of judgement", saying splicing parts of Trump's speech together "did give the impression of a direct call for violent action"
  • Trump's legal team has written to the BBC, giving them until Friday to apologise and "appropriately compensate" him - see parts of the letter here
  • This is completely new territory for the corporation - but in the US, we've seen a succession of outlets cave in to Trump, writes our media editor Katie Razzall

The BBC is battling its biggest crisis in decades after its two most senior leaders resigned over accusations of bias that have prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to threaten legal action for "no less" than $1 billion unless he gets compensation.
