I recently reconnected with my old pal WNEW's Fisherman. Andy told me an interesting story that no one promised not to tell.
He says when Keith graduated from Cornell, he got a job at UPI Audio. One of UPI Audio's features was a sports opinion piece, "My Side," written and narrated by UPI Sports Editor Milt Richman. Milt was a great sportswriter, but he turned the audio "column" over to Keith.
His pieces were brilliant, and we used them all on WNEW-FM. They were a little over the heads of UPI and its client stations, and Keith called me one morning to tell me he'd been fired. I called UPI and said that I didn't intend to use ANY of their stuff without Keith. Lo and behold, Keith was back on the payroll. That was just the beginning, as it turned out -- and as Keith eloquently explains in his book, "The Big Show."
Keith came to WNEW-FM to do one of his pieces live. While he was there, the AM news director heard him and hired him to fill in for his ailing sportscaster -- THAT MORNING. A big shot from CNN heard him and hired him to do sports commentaries on his network.
The rest is history and KO has been calling any out GOP or a SOB that deserves to receive a special ID.
