FLUSHING THE FLU

There’s a new, highly contagious “super flu’” surge, and more and more Americans are looking for ways to treat the symptoms, which include everything from coughing with fever and chills, to headaches and vomiting.

The variant of influenza A H3N2, called subclade K, is being blamed for reportedly hitting residents in New York, Rhode Island, Colorado, and Louisiana the hardest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It is not limited to a specific region. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there have been at least 4.5 million cases of the subclade K flu with 49,000 hospitalizations and 1,900 flu deaths this season.

According to the latest influenza case numbers from the CDC, Ohio is considered to be at moderate risk. Indiana is low, and Kentucky has a minimal level of influenza activity.

While flu vaccines usually have an efficacy rate of 40% to 60 percent, an early reportfrom the U.K. estimates this “super flu” strain has an efficacy rate of 32% to 39% in adults, and 72% to 75% in children
