MARGARITA RULES

Submitted by ub on

A margarita is taking over the bar. So are ranch waters, Palomas, and reposado old fashioned. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the US, agave-based liquors like tequila and mezcal were the fastest-growing spirits category of 2022, and are now poised to overtake vodka as the best-selling liquor in the United States this year, after knocking whiskey into third place last year.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! We celebrate the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While it's not Mexican Independence Day (that's September 16th), Cinco de Mayo has become a significant cultural holiday for many Latinos in the US and beyond.

While the Margarita news may be great for celebrating Mexican heritage on Cinco de Mayo, it’s not exactly a climate win. Tequila’s combination of versatility and flavor—as easy to mix as vodka in a cocktail, but at the premium end, better for sipping—comes with a higher cost. In the spirit of transparency, I should point out that my late mom's name was Margarita, therefore as far as I can tell, Mi mama Margarita always ruled.

Anyway, according to Mexican law, tequila has to be produced from blue agave plants grown in one of five Mexican states. Mezcal adds a few more states and agave varietals to the mix, but the succulent plant’s limited growing range means that the Mexican spirits have to be trucked over long distances to get to their ultimate destinations. Tequila’s growing global popularity has also led to a loss in genetic diversity, as manufacturers turn to high-yielding monocrops that require increasing amounts of pesticides.

A good old soul who goes by the name Mikey, and a brother from another mother wrote: " Cinco de Mayo celebrates the only time the Mexicans won a war and then it was only the French whose asses they kicked back whence they came.

Worth celebrating with a big plate of Gringo tacos, yup! "
