Iran says the deal to end the war with the US requires Israel to withdraw from Lebanon

According to reporting on the draft agreement, Trump calls the deal as a major success because it appears to achieve several immediate goals:

  • Ending or pausing the conflict between the U.S. and Iran.
  • Reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.
  • Reducing oil prices and stabilizing markets.
  • Bringing Iran back into a negotiating process over its nuclear activities.

However, reports indicate that the initial memorandum is largely a framework agreement, and it does not appear to contain a detailed, enforceable settlement of Iran's nuclear program.

The Washington Post noted that Trump declared victory even though the deal itself was reportedly silent on explicit nuclear-weapons provisions.

  • The gap arises because different officials have described the agreement differently:

  • Trump has said Iran agreed it will "never have a nuclear weapon."
  • Iranian officials have described the draft as involving limits on enrichment, a freeze on further nuclear expansion, inspections, sanctions discussions, and future negotiations—but not necessarily a final resolution of all nuclear issues.
  • Both sides appear to envision a 60-day negotiation period to work out a broader agreement covering sanctions relief and the nuclear program.
  • On the oil issue, Trump said ships were already moving through the Strait of Hormuz and urged that oil flow resume. But shipping groups, maritime officials, and some governments have said practical questions remain about safety, insurance, and transit rules, meaning the reopening may not be immediate or complete despite the political announcement.
