There are many convents and centers around the world, including one in The Bronx on 145th Street in Mott Haven. Considered the poorest area in the US, census figures have pegged the percentage of people below the poverty line in the South Bronx at 38 percent and it rises to 49 percent for children.
In addition to The Bronx convent, the Missionaries of Charity maintain a convent in Harlem and operate an AIDS hospice in Greenwich Village and a homeless shelter in Newark.
My dad was a devotee of Mother Teresa, so when I arrived in NY to build News 12, The Bronx, I traveled to the area at night, which was not the smartest decision I could have made, to offer a cash donation. As I walked towards the gated complex an individual surfaced to suggest I get the hell out of there because it was a danger zone. I delivered my offer and took his threat seriously. Thank God I lived to tell the story... And so it goes.
