PEEPING TOM

Submitted by ub on

Every year near the holidays, Tom Turkey counts down the days in hiding. He knows he’s being watched and is on the lookout.

The name PP comes from the legend of Lady Godiva's naked ride through the streets of Coventry, in order to persuade her husband to alleviate the harsh taxes on the town's poor. The story goes that the townsfolk agreed not to observe Godiva as she passed by, but that Peeping Tom broke that trust and spied on her. A "Peeping Tom, is a nickname for a curious prying fellow."

The ride is still commemorated (clothed) in the city each year. As the picture shows, there's no longer any taboo about watching it.

Turkeys get a bad reputation according to health experts, but it's not the only reason why a post-holiday dinner nap sounds so appealing.

It’s a common adage to attribute a holiday meal onset sleepiness to tryptophan, an amino acid that impacts hormones that support mood and sleep that’s also found in other meats, dairy, and seeds.

Turkey contains less tryptophan than a same-size portion of chicken breast or thigh, ham, sockeye salmon, pork chop, or duck breast, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture USDA.

A more realistic explanation is that Thanksgiving is the perfect storm of sleep-inducing factors.

Thanksgiving is a stressful time of year for a turkey! Especially when a hunter is chasing you. Tom refers to him as "Jerky"

Meanwhile, in New York, A storm system moving today will bring steady rain, strong winds, and the possibility of some icy roads for the start of Thanksgiving travel.

The National Weather Service issued weather alerts for nearly all of Upstate New York through Wednesday.

Winds could reach 40 mph across much of Upstate New York. There’s a high wind warning in effect for the southwestern corner of the state, near Lake Erie, where 60 mph gusts could cause power outages.

The pilgrims didn't invite Native Americans to a feast. Why the Thanksgiving myth matters.

Indigenous scholars and activists say that the Thanksgiving story ignores a longer past and future for Native Americans. Here is the whole story.
