RIP GEN XYZ

They fall under an extreme individualism label; generations directly before Generation Z (born approx. 1997–2012) are Millennials (Generation Y), born approximately 1981–1996. Before them are the generations: Generation X (1965–1980), Baby Boomers (1946–1964), and the Silent Generation (1925–1945). A shared cultural and technological experience defines each cohort. Here is a breakdown of the generations before Gen Z: Millennials (Gen Y): Born roughly 1981–1996. Known as digital pioneers, they grew up with the internet, social media, and significant economic shifts. Generation X: Born roughly 1965–1980. Often called "latchkey kids," this generation witnessed the rise of personal computing and the end of the Cold War.
Generation Z, born 1996–2010, faces intense scrutiny, with some studies suggesting potential declines in cognitive, reading, and focus scores due to excessive screen time and, in some cases, lower IQ test results compared to millennials. They are navigating a severe mental health crisis, characterized by anxiety, depression, and burnout, while struggling with the challenges of living in a constantly recorded, hyper-connected digital world.

Strong emphasis on personal identity (“me, myself, and I” culture)

  • Focus on mental health and boundaries

  • Skepticism toward traditional institutions

  • Desire for autonomy and self-definition

  • Highly engaged in social justice, not the elders

  • Community-oriented online

  • Concerned about climate change and global responsibility

  • Cultural messaging (social media often amplifies self-focus and personal branding)

  • Actual values and behavior (which are often more nuanced)

Consider the age-group of your offspring, coworkers, friends, and 5he current online culture.
