SAVE VOA AP PBS NPR

World Press Freedom is clouded by a somber and troubling development: the ill-advised silencing of AP, VOA, PBS, and NPR.

These are America's and the world’s preeminent international news broadcasters. For nearly two centuries, they have been more than news and information outlets; these are beacons of hope, forces for truth, and a vital instrument of public affairs throughout the world.

Delivering objective news and accurate reporting to the furthest reaches of the globe, places where no journalists could go. They have provided a trusted source of information for those yearning for freedom and democracy, while faithfully presenting the U.S. perspective and serving national interests with integrity.

To silence them now is not only shortsighted, it is profoundly harmful to our foreign policy, our credibility, and our moral leadership on the world stage. In an era of rising authoritarianism, disinformation, and global instability, shuttering America’s voice sends a dangerous message: that we are abandoning the fight for truth just when it is needed most.

They are not simply media outlets but a lifeline to millions. A voice for the voiceless. And it is a reminder that democratic values do not stop at national borders. Through its reporting, they have empowered oppressed populations, challenged dictatorships, and illuminated dark corners of the world where freedom struggles to survive.

This reckless move must be reversed. Congress must not abdicate its responsibility. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle should step forward not just to protect them but to reaffirm our nation’s commitment to press freedom, global engagement, and principled leadership.

To the thousands of journalists, past and present, who have carried the press freedom mission forward with courage and conviction: thank you. Your work has inspired generations, broken down barriers, and carried democratic ideals.

The truths they championed, the ideals defended, and the hope delivered will live on, reaching across borders, beyond regimes, and into the hearts of all who believe in freedom and truth.

Now is not the time for silence. Now is the time to speak — and to be heard.
