Thanks, Teachers!

Why doesn't everyone send a note out of the blue to anyone who's done something nice for you and made a difference in your life?

I am fortunate to have reconnected with two former greats at the beginning of my long and distinguished communications career. They were Dr. Charles Sweeting, WPU Professor, where I received my advanced degree, and Doctor Ken Tiven Managing Editor WPLG, where I landed my first paying job on TV and earned my street-wise Ph.D. from the School of Hard Knocks (aka) The University of Life.

These two role models forever changed my life by not only instilling in me a love of communication but, more importantly, giving in me the confidence I needed to realize my full potential.

The noted author, Dale Carnegie, was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Born into poverty on a farm in Missouri, he was the author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, a bestseller that remains popular once said that the words we say to people... We may forget two minutes later…but they may remember for the rest of our lives.

Similarly, all these years later, these two generous, caring, and inspirational mentors still serve as a guiding light in my personal and professional life as well as in my career. And it was my small gift to them to get back in touch with each of them, after all these years, to let them know that I still cherish their support and inspiration.

So who is someone that you’ve often thought of thanking, what’s been keeping you from doing so, and wouldn’t today be the perfect day to do so? So get to it now is a perfect time!

Finally, while putting together our year-end holiday gift list, keep in mind that the gift of appreciation is one that costs the least, and yet is often worth the most. And, unlike our financial budget, which may be limited, our gratitude can be limitless and abundant, so why not spread the wealth…not just during the holidays, but all year round.

Thankfully, the opportunity to commit random acts of thinks-giving is the perfect opportunity to show that special someone that you appreciate everything they have done for you and that delivering the milk of human kindness never has an expiration date nor does it ever go out of season.

Honorable mentions must go to teachers whose names I only called by their last name. Miss Calhoun at Dade County Elementary In Miami, Florida, and Miss Gibson at Roosevelt School in Kearny, New Jersey. I have reached out to both schools and hope to be able to connect with these fabulous fifth and sixth-grade teachers who were precious and invaluable to me in teaching the English language and how to navigate without knowing the English language fluently.
