🇮🇷 IRAN / STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Iran says it struck the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of attempting an illegal transit. The Associated Press says it could not immediately independently confirm the strike. Hundreds of thousands of people also rallied in Tehran in a government-organized demonstration.

🇺🇸 WASHINGTON / PRESS ACCESS

President Donald Trump said the White House is barring CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access. Reuters reports the outlets are expected to challenge the move legally, while free-press advocates have raised First Amendment concerns. Trump also said other media organizations could face similar action.

🇺🇸🇷🇺 RUSSIA / UKRAINE

Trump signed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill into law. The measure targets Russian officials, banks and energy infrastructure and gives the president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries importing Russian oil or gas under specified conditions. The Senate passed it 86-11 and the House 262-159.

🇷🇺 RUSSIA

Voting began Friday in Russia's three-day parliamentary election. Reuters reports the ruling United Russia party is widely expected to retain its dominant position, while the Kremlin has presented the election as a measure of support for President Vladimir Putin and his policies.

🇺🇦 EUROPE / UKRAINE

Poland joined an anti-ballistic-missile coalition with Ukraine and other allies. France's Emmanuel Macron separately said Russia is intensifying hybrid attacks against Europe.

🇩🇰🇬🇱 GREENLAND

Trump said the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement giving Washington a permanent role in Greenland's security while restricting sensitive investments by U.S. adversaries.

🇺🇳 UNITED NATIONS

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, preparing to leave office at the end of the year, told AP that international cooperation is essential to address conflicts, inequality, climate change and artificial intelligence. World leaders gather at the U.N. next week.

Authorities imposed an overnight curfew in Minna after security forces opened fire during protests over the deaths of detained miners. Reuters reports that 37 miners died in custody.

🇵🇰 PAKISTAN

At least 16 people were killed and 57 wounded in a suicide attack near a police compound in northwest Pakistan, according to police cited by Reuters.

🇾🇪 YEMEN / RED SEA

Fighting has intensified along Yemen's western coast, with civilians fleeing renewed Houthi advances. International concern is also growing over the security of commercial shipping through the Red Sea.

🤖 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order accelerating implementation of a state AI law requiring independent oversight of AI companies and mechanisms allowing developers to shut down certain systems. The broader U.S. debate over AI regulation is becoming increasingly prominent.
