Hey, my flesh and blood- Our Day Will Come!
The Cuban political refugees, as well as the people living inside the Communist island, have said many times over the years - Our Day Will Come. Meanwhile, during the past few days, the restless have taken over the Caribbean. In widely documented demonstrations against dictatorships, we have seen the violence that unarmed Cuban civilians can be subjected to simply for seeking freedom and asking their government to meet their basic needs. The stories, images, and testimonies that we are witnessing are mobilizing expressions of solidarity on the part of people around the world committed to the values of democracy.
As the Cuban people bravely face more than 60 years of oppression, governance failures in other countries in the hemisphere threaten civil liberties and undermine the fight against a pandemic that has taken a disproportionate price in the Americas. In fact, the pleas for "freedom!" in Cuba, came just days after Haiti faced the aftermath of a brutal presidential assassination, exacerbating pain and concern in South Florida over the desperate situations in which so many political refugees find themselves.
I and the mother of my kids were married in Miami, our children were both born in Florida and our history is full of rich geographic empowerment that strengthens our service.
After the 1959 revolution in Cuba, Miami opened its doors to many exiles like my dad and mom, Tata and Aby to learn English and work to continue their lives in our new home.
In a city of immigrants, we were fortunate to call the United States home. The powerful notion that true freedom cannot survive without the mutually supportive coexistence of homeland and life, is one we understand in the deeper levels, regardless of our nationality. In this historic moment, we must be willing to do our part. We fully accept the call for connection, which is so vital to empowering the brightest minds around the urgent and complex issues facing our Cuban family.

Los refugiados políticos cubanos, así como las personas que viven dentro de la isla comunista, han dicho muchas veces a lo largo de los años: Nuestro día llegará. Mientras tanto, durante los ultimos dias, los agitados se han apoderado del Caribe. En manifestaciones ampliamente documentadas contra las dictaduras, hemos vislumbrado la violencia a la que pueden ser sometidos los civiles cubanos desarmados simplemente por buscar la libertad y pedir a su gobierno que satisfaga sus necesidades básicas. Las historias, imágenes y testimonios que estamos presenciando están movilizando expresiones de solidaridad por parte de personas de todo el mundo comprometidas con los valores de la democracia.
Mientras el pueblo cubano se enfrenta con valentía a más de 60 años de opresión, las fallas de gobernanza en otros países del hemisferio amenazan las libertades civiles y socavan la lucha contra una pandemia que ha cobrado un precio desproporcionado en las Américas. De hecho, las súplicas de "¡libertad!" en Cuba se produjo pocos días después de que Haití se enfrentara a las secuelas de un brutal asesinato presidencial, lo que agravó el dolor y la preocupación en el sur de Florida por las situaciones desesperadas en las que se encuentran tantos refugiados politicos.

En una ciudad de inmigrantes afortunados de llamar hogar a los Estados Unidos, la poderosa noción de que la verdadera libertad no puede sobrevivir sin la coexistencia de apoyo mutuo entre la patria y la vida, “patria y vida”, es una que entendemos en los niveles más profundos, sin importar nuestro nacionalidad. En este momento histórico, debemos de estar dispuestos a hacer nuestra parte. Aceptamos plenamente el llamado a la conexión, que es tan vital para empoderar a las mentes más brillantes en torno a los problemas urgentes y complejos que enfrenta nuestra familia Cubana.
