Event: The NYC Deadline Club Awards Dinner

Columbia University Journalism School Dean Steve Coll will be the featured speaker at the The Deadline Club's annual awards dinner, which will recognize the best work in 2014 by New York area news organizations—including The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, The New York Times, the New York Daily News, ProPublica, ESPN and Fortune Magazine—in categories such as print, digital, video, television, radio and still pictures. Coll led the investigation into the breakdown of journalistic safeguards on Rolling Stone magazine's problem-ridden story, “A Rape on Campus,” which it retracted. Besides heading the country's most prestigious journalism school, Coll teaches there as a Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism. A staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, he spent 20 years at the Washington Post as a reporter, foreign correspondent and senior editor until 2005, winning the first of his two Pulitzer Prizes along the way, Coll will be interviewed by Jennifer Saba of Reuters. If so, check out The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism, an initiative of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism designed to support ambitious coverage of critical issues related to U.S. economy and business. The McGraw Fellowships enable experienced journalists to do the deep reporting needed to produce a significant investigative, analytic or narrative business story. Each McGraw Fellow will receive a stipend of $5,000 a month for up to three months, along with editorial guidance and assistance in placing stories with established print, radio or digital outlets. No residency is required; Fellows work from their own offices. Freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at a news organization may apply. Event: National Press Foundation presents: Food, From Farm To Table

“Everybody eats,” but few know the context and history behind their meals. This all-expenses-paid NPF program will take a holistic look at the issues: hunger, food waste, organic, GMOs, food science, feeding the world’s growing population, and more. How can we grow the food we need on the land we have? What innovations and technology will define the future of food sources? How does food move from field to processor to supermarket to table? How do we keep our food supply safe? And how does a nation of plenty have almost 50 million people struggling with hunger? During this four-day program, journalists will visit an organic farm and Monsanto’s research labs for a ground view of agriculture. We will identify speakers to give journalists an in-depth and balanced look at all facets of food and agriculture. Join members of the New York Financial Writers’ Association for the presentation of our 2014 Elliott V. Bell Award, which will be awarded to John Huey, former editor-in-chief of Time Inc. Huey is the 39th recipient of the Elliott V. Bell Award, which is named after the NYFWA’s founding president and which recognizes individuals who have made long-term contributions to financial journalism and have had a significant impact on the industry. As part of the evening, Huey will take part in a panel that will discuss the evolving nature of business news as it adapts and an increasingly digitized business model. He will be joined on the panel by Martin Nisenholtz, the former digital head at The New York Times who now serves as a professor of the practice of digital communication at Boston University and venture partner at Firstmark Capital in New York; John Geddes, former managing editor of The New York Times and Paul Sagan, an executive in residence at venture capital firm General Catalyst Partners and a director (and former CEO) of Akamai Technologies. The panel will be moderated by Andy Serwer, editor-in-chief of Yahoo.Finance. The evening will begin with a short reception featuring wine and appetizers.
