Event: Freelancers at Risk: Photojournalism and the Call for Global Safety Standards

In light of the increasing brutality against journalists overseas, the Investigative Reporting Workshop, the National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Committee to Protect Journalists will present a frank conversation about standards for hiring and protecting freelance journalists working in war zones. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, David Rohde, formerly with the New York Times and now with Reuters, will moderate the first panel, “Freelance Photographers.” He was kidnapped and held for seven months in Taliban captivity in Afghanistan before his escape in 2009. Come hear how to transition into freelancing and keep the assignments coming at the Spring Freelance Workshop, May 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Zenger Room at the National Press Club. Co-sponsored by the National Press Club's Freelance Committee and the Washington chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists, the workshop comprises two panels. The first panel focuses on how to transition to freelancing from a full-time job. Three full-time freelancers will describe how they made the switch, including the highs and lows of the freelance life. The panel will be moderated by Tam Harbert, chair of the Freelance Committee and a full-time freelancer specializing in business and technology. The second panel, on how to keep your business pipeline full, will feature two freelancers and a business development coach. It will be moderated by Stephenie Overman, who has covered workplace and health issues for 20 years as a freelancer. Do you – or a reporter you know – have a great idea for an investigative or enterprise story on a business or economic topic, but few resources to get it done? If so, check out The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism, an initiative of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism designed to support ambitious coverage of critical issues related to U.S. economy and business. The McGraw Fellowships enable experienced journalists to do the deep reporting needed to produce a significant investigative, analytic or narrative business story. Each McGraw Fellow will receive a stipend of $5,000 a month for up to three months, along with editorial guidance and assistance in placing stories with established print, radio or digital outlets. No residency is required; Fellows work from their own offices. Freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at a news organization may apply. Five years professional experience as a journalist is required. The deadline for Spring 2015 Fellowship applications is May 15, 2015.
