Event: Fifth Annual University of Virginia Investing Conference

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business is hosting its annual two-day investing conference on 15-16 November 2012. This year’s conference, “After the Election: Realities, Opportunities, and Challenges for Investors,” will feature: Kyle Bass, managing partner of Hayman Capital Management L.P., Jeremy Grantham, co-founder and chief investment strategist of Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo, Dennis Lockhart, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and David Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group. Other speakers include: Porter Collins, general partner and portfolio manager of Seawolf Capital; Dr. Richard Evans, founder and general manager of Sector & Sovereign Research; Rebecca Patterson, chief markets strategist for the global private bank and institutional arm of J.P. Morgan Asset Management; and Jay Venkatesan, founder of Ayer Capital Management. The program also includes three panels on the sectors that are expected to experience the most change after the election: energy, health care and financial services.
Registration is $500 until July 8 and $650 afterwards. The conference is open to all investment professionals, journalists, U.Va. alumni, faculty and staff, and current students from other universities and colleges. A special registration price of $325 is offered to Darden alumni who graduated any time between 2007 and 2011. Event: SABEW Investigative Reporting Workshops

Learn the skills you need to be a better investigative journalist at one of two investigative reporting workshops July 13 in Oklahoma City and July 19 in Toronto presented by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.
The all-day programs will focus on what it takes to produce a successful investigative endeavor from start to finish — the Oklahoma City event will have an emphasis on coverage of the energy industry — from several top performers in business news media. Both are sponsored by SABEW with special funding from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.
Brian Grow of Reuters, Margot Habiby of Bloomberg, Angel Gonzales of Dow Jones Newswires, Phillip O’Connor of The Oklahoman and Elizabeth Souder of The Dallas Morning News will be among journalists featured at the “Drilling Deep” workshop Friday, July 13, at The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City.
Andy Hall, renowned reporter and architect of the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism; Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Jesse Eisinger of ProPublica and Pulitzer finalist Chris Adams, who is part of the investigative team at McClatchy Newspapers in Washington, D.C., will be among journalists who will speak at the “Drilling Deep” workshop Thursday, July 19, at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto.
For each workshop, admission is free for SABEW members. Non-members pay $35 per workshop, for which they will receive a one-year individual SABEW membership valued at $55. The workshops are among a total of four to be conducted this year -- the others will be in Tampa, Fla., and San Francisco -- through a SABEW grant from the Ethics and Ethics in Journalism Foundation. The foundation, based in Oklahoma City, made a $25,000 award as part of a series of grants to 19 journalism organizations nationwide.
