Abe Lincoln and Andrew Johnson who was Abraham Lincoln's vice president in 1864, after being chosen to balance the ticket for the Union Party. 

Lincoln replaced his previous vice president, Hannibal Hamlin, with Johnson, a War Democrat, to broaden the appeal of the Republican ticket. Lincoln and Johnson won the 1864 election against the Democratic ticket of George B. McClellan and George H. Pendleton. 

Previous Vice President: Before the 1864 election, Hannibal Hamlin served as Lincoln's vice president. Reason: Lincoln chose Johnson to attract War Democrats and create a "Union" party ticket for the 1864 election. Election Outcome: Lincoln and Johnson won the election, defeating McClellan and Pendleton. Successor: After Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, Andrew Johnson became the 17th POTUS.
