“Blue Dunes” project was conceived by New Jersey’s Stevens Institute of Technology and architectural firms costing around $12 billion, and would stretch from central Long Island, N.Y., to the southern tip of Long Beach Island in New Jersey.
Logistical, political, financial and technical issues still have to be overcome in the Rebuild By Design contest being held by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to solicit new ideas to protect the region from future storms.
