As students become more vocal because they feel powerless and overlooked, free speech issues continue to heat up at schools throughout America and they will not be silenced.
The US Constitution First Amendment protects speech no matter how offensive its content. Restrictions on a speech by public colleges and universities amount to government censorship, in violation of the Constitution.
These restrictions deprive students of their right to invite speech they wish to hear, debate speech with which they disagree, and protest speech they find bigoted or offensive.
An open society depends on liberal education, and the whole enterprise of liberal education is founded on the principle of free speech. The First Amendment does not protect behavior on campus that crosses the line into targeted harassment or threats, or that creates a pervasively hostile environment for vulnerable students.
To put political correctness on college campuses in perspective, is it a terrible scourge, or media hysteria? It may also help to look at another institution with hormonal 18- to 24-year-olds: the U.S. military.
However, while the civilian American population is afforded the right to free expression under the First Amendment, the US Supreme Court says that service members have a reduced level of free speech.
