Coffee Light or Dark?

Bad News for the world's coffee drinkers: You might be a psychopath if you like black coffee, according to academic research.

Do you drink your coffee black? According to the news online, that might make you a psychopath. The same goes for people who enjoy other bitter foods and beverages, like tonic water, kale, broccoli rabe, and radishes.

The study from the University of Innsbruck in Austria https://www.uibk.ac.at/ found that people who enjoyed milky or sugary coffee, and other sweet flavors, generally tended to have more “agreeable” personality traits like sympathy, cooperation, and kindness. The closest correlation found in the study was between bitter foods, like radishes and tonic water, and “everyday sadism,” or the enjoyment of inflicting moderate levels of pain on others.

Most research on taste preference and personality traits points to a fondness for bitter foods that are linked to some pretty dark characteristics.

That study in the news linking coffee to psychopathic personality traits was originally published a few years ago, in the journal Appetite. The study authors, from the University of Innsbruck in Austria, wrote in their introduction that “some connection between taste preferences and personality has been established, yet the evidence is still scarce.”
