The Coup or Golpe de Estado is a Banana Republic term of Spanish and Latin-American origin for a French coup d'état. The coup d'état is called golpe de Estado in Spanish which was less common in Spain and South America, while more popular in Central America and Mexico.
Regardless of the name that is given, it means the overthrow of an existing government; typically, this refers to an illegal, unconstitutional seizure of power by a dictator, the military, or a political faction. I should know, I have felt a few up close and personal in Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala...etc.
