Cuban Exile Anthem SOS

Submitted by ub on

When I was recruited to work for US President George HW Bush's GOP administration at USIA, I was the only non-Republican that I know of (I have no political affiliation) and the youngest GM-15/10 to serve in Washington DC.

One f the first things we did to break the mold was to produce the US Government's first Music Video that was transmitted to CUBA after being recorded at a Willy Chirino concert in Miami and also at an anti-Castro rally in New York City. There, Harry Belafonte was holding a concert at the Jacob Javits Center in support of Fidel, so exiles gathered outside to show our opposition. January 25, 1992. Very little has unfortunately changed in Cuba and the Communists are still in charge.

Music and Lyrics Wilfredo José Chirino aka #WillyChirino.

Oh, oh...

Lost in Translation?

While I was just a child there in the Antilla
My father dressed me as a sailor
I had to sail 90 miles
and start my life as a foreigner

Fleeing to the sickle and the olive tree
running from that absurd ideology
Well, I never wanted to be an aperitif
of hatred, resentment, and apathy

In the suitcase, I brought a hummingbird
a book by Martí, a dream, and a danzón
Beny Moré came as a stowaway
next to the Matamoros and Cumin

He brought me a palm tree and a hut
and I even relocated to Pinar del Río
in my humble place of lodging
by the two and avenue of knowledge

Eh eh.....

That's where the harsh reality began, Oh God!
of everyone who throws the rope
to survive outside their language
of their customs and their identity

He happened what had to happen
from my new city take your coat
because resignation is a faithful friend
of man when he has to emigrate

And despite the distance and the attack
of the rigid almanac, I live with luck
to feel CUBAN to death
of being a lover of freedom

Today that my people live excited
I feel inspired and a sound I am singing
announcing to all my brothers
that our day is coming

Oh oh...
It's coming
Oh oh...

It's coming
Already the whole world is waiting for it
It's coming
Ay, beautiful and exquisite Cuba
It's coming
Because we are a people that are singing
It's coming
I want to see my flag fly, Cuba awaits us

I will sing my heart song
It's coming
In the gazebo of the park and the Consolation
It's coming
Every day I love you more my beautiful Cuba I love you more
It's coming
From San Antonio to Maicí by Maceo and by Martí
It's coming
