HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

Submitted by ub on

The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

To serve as this day of remembrance. The day commemorates the victims of the Nazi regime and also promotes Holocaust education. The National Archives has numerous records related to the Holocaust, including video and audio footage from military trials held after World War II, still photographs, and motion pictures.

Check out the Unwritten Record blog post promoting Holocaust education. https://unwritten-record.blogs.archives.gov/2023/01/24/international-ho…;

This is the story of the late and great Captain Leonard Gold, a child when Hitler rose to power. He was born in The Bronx to Jewish parents.

Lenny once told me his family did everything possible to protect him from dangers, and the horrific oppression unfolding. He joined the US military and many years later I had the good fortune of meeting him, long after retiring from the US Air Corps.

Captain Gold was a pleasure to speak with. I took the time to get to know him and he showed me that getting old does not mean fading away. Rest in peace, Lenny. He was a volunteer, so he volunteered to speak to one of my college classes. This is the story I wrote for The Jewish Times.

Nazi death camp survivors mark the 79th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation on Holocaust Remembrance Day. About 20 survivors from various camps set up by Nazi Germany around Europe laid wreaths and flowers and lit candles at the Death Wall in Auschwitz.

The Origins of International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The commemorations on January 27 remind us that the Holocaust was the result of step-by-step decisions by individuals that led to the largest genocide in the history of mankind in a wave of antisemitism, intolerance, and hatred.
