I live in a hell of a town with nearly 21 million other residents. It’s New York City, the largest metropolitan hub in the entire nation. As everyone knows by now, we are facing a difficult public health crisis with the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19.
As NYC declares a state of emergency, bans large crowds the question which begs to be asked is how many SuperSpreaders are walking around here and in many other large cities? A super-spreader is an unusually contagious person who is infected. Such super-spreaders are of particular concern in epidemiology. So far, there are 2655 cases in 49 states, DC and U.S. territories, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 3000 and rising, with dozens of deaths.
There have never been as many people inside NYC saving and loans wearing masks who were not there to hold up the place and weren't real bank robbers.
Transportation options include a 24-hour MTA subway system and an extensive bus network, as well as many walkable neighborhoods. New York has a relatively low crime rate for the population size, but not as much activity lately.
What the #FamiliesFirst Coronavirus Response Act will mean for New York:
$6.7B in healthcare funds
$1B for people who may find themselves out of work
$15M for seniors who may need meals
Free testing
Paid sick leave
Strengthened food assistance
The Republican-controlled Senate must pass it NOW.
Meanwhile, fear of #COVID19 can fan racism. But our reporters find that Big Apple communities are countering prejudice with acts of kindness and gratitude.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says we're in a war-time scenario but we're getting a Mar-a-Lago attitude from the feds. We needed testing, ventilators, surgical masks weeks ago when Trump was calling this pandemic a hoax. The Mayor decided that schools will remain open so far during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the problem is that NY has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in-country.
