Curating Change: Leila Janah on Equality

“Women are the world's silent majority. We do not, for the most part, start wars and hoard resources … However, we earn 10% of the world's income and own 1% of the property. Our wages are roughly 17% lower than men's. Something has to change, and soon.”
--Leila Janah on Equality

Our final installment in 2011 of Curating Change features social entrepreneur Leila Janah on Equality. Leila is the founder of the organization Samasource, which provides work to marginalized women and youth living in poverty around the globe.

IIMOW is a proud partner of the Skirball Cultural Center’s newly launched Women Hold Up Half the Sky exhibition, inspired by The New York Times bestseller Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. IMOW's Vice President of Exhibitions and Programs Catherine King served on the Advisory Group for the exhibition, and IMOW will be featured in the exhibition's "Action Station."

Take part in a groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind gallery experience, on view at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA, through March 11, 2012. Celebrating the individual’s role in workable solutions, Women Hold Up Half the Sky addresses the oppression of women worldwide as the human rights cause of our time. Give to IMOW to Support Women's Art and Stories!

To date, IMOW has captured the stories of mothers in Somalia, Afghanistan, and Hungary to be featured in the upcoming exhibition Mama: Motherhood Around the Globe.

The realities of 21st century mothers will surprise you! Access to resources like healthcare differ dramatically and maternal mortality continues to claim the life of a woman every 90 seconds. The majority of these deaths--over 90%--are preventable.

We need your support to continue to canvas the globe, working with award-winning journalists to capture the untold stories of mothers in places like China, Mexico and Norway.

Help IMOW tell their stories. Show your support for IMOW today!
