While Americans celebrate the 246th anniversary of Independence Day. Take a moment to reflect and to learn about these crimes.
The 4th of July is supposed to be about “independence”. How bad is the USA 🇺🇸 getting screwed over this holiday weekend?
The United States is a federal republic whose people benefit from a vibrant political system, a strong rule-of-law tradition, robust freedoms of expression and religious belief, and a wide array of other civil liberties. However, in recent years it's democratic institutions have suffered erosion, as reflected in partisan pressure on the electoral process, bias and dysfunction in the criminal justice system, harmful policies on immigration and asylum seekers, and growing disparities in wealth, and economic opportunity, and political influence.
Freedom House evaluated the political rights and civil liberties in countries across the globe to determine which nations offer the greatest freedoms on earth. https://freedomhouse.org/
The political rights category refers to elections and government function, while civil liberties refer to individual freedoms. Each category is divided into metrics with four points each. Four out of four is a perfect score, but if a country limits its citizens’ freedoms, it could lose a point or two.
#FreedomHouse ranks countries using a 100-point system, with 100 being a perfect score — and surprise, surprise: the U.S. is nowhere near the top. Keep in mind that some countries are also tied for having the same scores.
Despite the United States' reputation as the freest country in the world, Freedom House gives the U.S. a score of 83/100 — which means the country doesn’t even make the top 50.
While Americans enjoy plenty of basic rights, accusations of government corruption and election fraud, growing economic inequality, and controversial policies on immigrants and asylum seekers have dropped the country's ranking.
Freedom House says gerrymandering and voting restrictions have also impinged on the rights of U.S. citizens.
