Marvelous Miracles

Submitted by ub on

Watch these video models. The miracles began 100 million years ago in the midst of the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea.

At the beginning of the animation, the continents that will become Africa and South America are already recognizable, with the Northern Hemisphere continents coming together tens of millions of years later. Blue shows the flow of water, while red shows the intensity of the deposition of new sediments by erosion.

For much of human history, most people did not live in cities

Cities—densely populated and self-administered settlements—require many specific prerequisites to come into existence. The most crucial, especially for much of human history, is an abundance of food.

Surplus food production leads to denser populations and allows people to specialize in other skills not associated with basic human survival.
