MODESTY

On this Grammys Weekend, I recall attending the show as a news manager and meeting music legends, but this is not the time to drop names. There is one song from long ago, which may not have won multiple awards, but is very special in my professional life.

Modesty, or being demure, is a mode of dress and deportment that intends to avoid the encouraging of sexual attraction in others. It comes from the Latin word Modestus which means keeping within a measure.

Decades after its original release, "El Sonido Nuevo" is still a classic musical recording. This LP is required listening to everyone who is interested in Latin jazz.

Also, it’s part of the soundtrack of my life and holds a special place on my eternal playlist. Modesty, one of the songs included in the album was the theme of my first Television program. "Job Line" on WPLG-TV 10 Miami.

Xylophone and Marimba master Cal Tjader and Piano great Eddie Palmeri fans didn’t know how to react. It was not the Tjader and Palmeri of old.

These tunes were an eclectic mix of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Latin jazz, blaring trombones, lush vibraphone, syncopated beats, and sizzling bass lines.

Earlier in my life, I attended a high school where there were no Latino upperclassmen and since I was the lead singer of a local band, I was expected to sing this Spanish language favorite at our dances. Richie Valens made the song popular. https://youtu.be/Jp6j5HJ-Cok

However, this is the original and therefore greatest version. https://youtu.be/9zRIHqlycss

Now, most recently, a song that hits home, mainly because I can never return again to my beloved island of Cuba and the Capital city where I was born. https://youtu.be/HCjNJDNzw8Y
