My Island Attraction

Submitted by ub on

I'm lucky and truly blessed to live in a gorgeous place. I call City Island - A Slice of NYC Paradise, but I was born on another island.

I was born in HABANA, CUBA, the youngest of three children from a devout Catholic family of professionals. In fact, my parents were married on December 12, La Virgen de Guadalupe, Mexico's Patron Saint. My mother was a teacher, and my father was a lawyer. The value of love, religion, the importance of higher education, and community service was always made clear.

Say the word Havana, or call her by her given name, La Habana and it conjures up an image of a gorgeous city ravished by history and politics. La Habana channels the spirit of Aphrodite, of Venus, of Ochún, the Afro-Cuban goddess, who represents beauty, sensuality, or perhaps La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patron Saint of Cuba. This is one of the many reasons why I feel blessed.

My mother and father were very intelligent, witty, hard-working individuals. and smart enough to move away from Cuba when Communists took over our nation. They move to America where served as volunteers in the evenings, but always found time to enjoy family time. They encouraged us to respect everyone, to participate in sports, and to make time for community service. When we arrived here from Cuba, my mother and father found jobs as social workers.
