Election Day History

Voters across the nation braved the unusually long lines during a midterm election that determined the balance of power in Congress.

The Republicans boasting of a strong majorities in the US House of Representatives as well as The Senate were significantly diminished by weak candidates who shared the GOP crazy uncle’s aversion to reality and real facts.

The hot button issues included individual rights, inflation, crime and who could lead our nation. Many found the process painless with  a few isolated reports or problems. In the current male-dominated world of politics, women are making history. Kathy Hochul @KathyHochul was reelected governor of New York and Sarah Huckabee Sanders won Arkansas’ gubernatorial race.

Democrats picked up two governorships as Maura Healy and Wes Moore won races in Massachusetts and Maryland. Republicans appeared to have the upper hand in the five seats necessary to control the House, but their successes so far stopped short of Trump's lies about a “Red Wave.”

Millions of voters across the US cast ballots in one of the most highly anticipated midterm elections in recent years. Polls suggest the final weeks of campaigning were defined by a shift in momentum, driven by persistent inflation and economic concerns. Some projections gave the GOP a 55 percent chance of winning the Senate and more than an 80 percent chance of retaking the House. See final polls here.

Early voting across the USA surpassed the levels seen four years ago, with more than 43 million early votes cast—roughly 20 million ballots were submitted in person, with 23 million mail ballots collected so far. Early voting varies by state; check the breakdown here.

Democratic governors Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Tony Evers of Wisconsin were re-elected, while Josh Shapiro succeeded an outgoing Democratic governor in Pennsylvania, according to projections from Edison Research.

The three states served as a “blue wall” that helped President Joe Biden defeat Donald Trump in 2020, when Republican officials tried to overturn those results.

Meanwhile, US Representative Sean Patrick Maloney conceded to @lawler4ny in New York’s 17th congressional district, making Lawler the first #Republican to defeat a #Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee chairman in 40 years.

To be a fly on the wall of the former guy in Mar-a-Lago will see either he makes a bad decision or be seen as a weak coward.

Republicans control the state legislatures in all three, making the governorships crucial to vetoing legislation. The Democrats concessions are classy. They include of the “privilege to concede.” It reminds a lot of sore losers that, in this country, when you lose you concede. That’s a great lesson for everyone!
