As The Big Apple sees signs of stabilization deaths, we must resist the temptation to backslide on social distancing now that there is a hint of progress emerging in the battle against the outbreak. It gives new meaning to the phrase not in our backyard, as some claim they should be cremated.
Hart Island is a small strip of land that is accessible only by boat and pre-arranged by the bureau of prisons. It is located east of City Island, A Slice of NYC Paradise. Today, our streets are silent and our docks deserted.
As a longtime resident and homeowner of City Island, I can report that on a normal week, about two dozen bodies are buried by NYC prisoners brought via busses driven by corrections officers.
On a typical weekday morning, I could hear the ferry horn blow signaling the vessel crossing the waters of Long Island Sound. Now, since March these trips are more frequent as coronavirus pandemic quickly spread, making New York the national epicenter. There are now hundreds, or even thousands going to be interred on a regular basis, five days a week.
