The relics of one of the Catholic Church’s most beloved saints, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, will be on display for veneration at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, September 17, 2017, and Monday, September 18, 2017, from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. The Saint Pio Foundation organized this remarkable tour of Padre Pio’s relics in the United States in honor of the 130th anniversary of Padre Pio’s birth and the 15th anniversary of his canonization. This extraordinary visit will be ushered in with a historic performance by The Sistine Chapel Choir, the world’s oldest and most distinguished choir, also known as “the Pope’s Choir”, on Saturday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. Seats are still available for the concert and may be reserved here.
Padre Pio’s relics will be officially welcomed at the Cardinal’s Mass at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 17, 2017. Archbishop of New York, Timothy Cardinal Dolan will be celebrating the Mass and The Sistine Chapel Choir will be providing the music. Churches throughout the Archdiocese of New York and neighboring dioceses have organized pilgrimages to the Cathedral for this rare opportunity to venerate the relics of Padre Pio. All Masses on Sunday, September 17 and Monday, September 18 will be said in memory of Padre Pio and for the intentions of the pilgrims visiting the Cathedral. The closing Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie, Rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Monday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m. Ave Maria https://youtu.be/lwQO43a4WvI
Padre Pio’s ministry spanned much of the twentieth century in Europe, including two world wars. His vocation was distinctively Franciscan and marked by profound prayer. Padre Pio was uncompromising in his preaching of the Gospel of Peace and spent much of his life ministering to pilgrims who visited him from all parts of the world seeking spiritual direction. This great saint and mystic wore gloves to cover the rare markings of Christ, the stigmata, on his hands. These gloves, as well as his cloak, and other precious relics will be on display in the center aisle of the Sanctuary of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Kindly note, that during Masses, the relics will be moved to the Altar of the Holy Family, situated by the 51st street entrance of the Cathedral.
