On the day known as Bloody Sunday, John Lewis and a line of nonviolent protesters were beaten and tear-gassed by Alabama state troopers in Selma. The state-sanctioned violence helped spur the passage of the federal Voting Rights Act. Lewis later was admitted to a local hospital with a possible skull fracture.
