American sweetheart Doris Day has died at the age of 97 in Carmel Valley, CA. Ms. Day was an actress, singer, and animal welfare activist. After she began her career as a big band singer in 1939, her popularity increased with her first hit recording "Sentimental Journey" a song that was written by Les Brown (1912-2001) and the lyrics were written by Bud Green (1897-1981). It coincidentally was released at the end of WWII and became the unofficial homecoming song for WWII veterans.
The most famous version of this tune was sung by Doris Day in 1945 https://youtu.be/famawM06J54
She was one of America's most prolific actresses. Ms. Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Alma Sophia (Welz), a housewife, and William Joseph Kappelhoff, a music teacher and choirmaster. Her grandparents were all German immigrants. She had two brothers, Richard, who died before she was born and Paul, a few years older.
