Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was gunned down in March of 1980 will finally be canonized and become a Saint in the Catholic Church.
During the terrible time, I covered the bloody civil war, I can name no one else who deserves this honor. The Reverend Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was a special man of the cloth in El Salvador, who served as the fourth Archbishop of the Capital San Salvador. He knew he had a target on his back and felt abandoned.
Romero spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations, torture, and many did not want to hear it. Although it was vehemently denied, most believe it was Los Escuadrones de la Muerte, The Death Squads, whose leader some say was eventually punished by God Almighty with deadly cancer.
