Jazz has a history in the Bronx, in fact, there are 6 NEA Jazz Masters who grew up or made their home here: Jimmy Owens, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, and Lou Donaldson. Being named an NEA Jazz Master is receiving a lifetime achievement award. The highest honor in the land for jazz artists. The recipient must be alive and, preferably, currently working. There have been those who have been recognized but are essentially inactive. However, like everyone, the NEA prefers to get its name out there and have its awardees recognized as such.
