The Pope takes over The United Nations today, Pope Francis formally addresses the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. The assembly is celebrating its 70th anniversary, the attendance and address of Pope Francis are guaranteed to make it a special one.
This year’s assembly will also involve huge decisions for its members concerning sustainable development, climate change and much more. In addition to Pope Francis’ address to the assembly he will also have bilateral meetings with the Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly, and participate in a town hall gathering with United Nations staff. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. There are 193 Member States, and the purpose is to take action on the issues that are confronting humanity in the 21st century.
Pope Paul VI spoke to the General Assembly in 1965, when he visited. Pope John Paul II addressed them twice – saying that he came as a witness to human dignity. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI also spoke to the United Nations.
