Forecasters have placed New York City, Long Island, and portions of New Jersey under a freeze watch as unseasonably bitter temperatures settle over the East Coast early this week.
NYC Emergency Management says the watch goes into effect late Monday night and continues through Tuesday morning, with overnight lows expected to fall to around 30°F in the five boroughs, cold enough to damage vulnerable plants and potentially freeze any exposed pipes.
The polar vortex doesn't have a fixed duration, and its impact can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
