COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

Submitted by Admin on

By the early 1980s, hunger in New York City had become unbearably severe. Religious organizations and charitable agencies had long served their neighborhoods in relative isolation; despite the heroic efforts of these groups, their ad hoc approach had inherent limitations. Many began to realize that soup kitchens here and there could relieve, but not end, the problem of hunger in New York City.

Community leaders from all five boroughs met in April 1983 and concluded that the best way to tackle hunger in the city was with a unified organization that helped emergency food providers and pushed for long-term solutions. In this spirit, the New York City Coalition Against Hunger was born.

The Coalition's original mission was to "coordinate the activities of the emergency food providers in the city so that issues can be identified, prioritized and addressed effectively." Though its aims have expanded and evolved over the last two decades - for example, it has strengthened advocacy and legislative efforts and now provides national service participants to emergency food providers - food access for all New Yorkers has always remained the Coalition's animating goal.

What's Going on Here?

Submitted by Admin on

From the Northern Plains to the Rocky mountains. While half of the people of this great country are still enduring winter weather, folks in other areas are experiencing sudden summer and yet other regions seeing unusually strong winds and wet weather conditions.

People in the Midwest do not trust those on the East, or the West coast. Southerners do not trust those from the north, while our politicians obstructionists continue to block progress and keep fighting each other across the isle.

And the worst part is that this is clearly evident, while visiting different geographical areas. Political leaders from some countries are threatening to annihilate humanity. How did we manage to get to this situation?

What the ---- is going on in the world today?

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in this country. One out od a dozen adults suffers from alcohol abuse or dependence. Long-term use may cause serious complications. When it comes to drinking, do you know fact from fiction?

For heavy drinkers, alcohol can be a difficult habit to break. In fact, researchers have discovered that heavy drinkers produce acetate faster compared to light drinkers, this means that their brains compensate more for the energy lost after drinking alcohol than the brains of people who drink less.
