It was too good to last, if you didn't mind the probability of getting harassed by teenagers, while enjoying a deal on Tuesdays, when $6 movie tickets bought you the most recent film releases. Some of the best known names in music will be performing in Westchester County, when Yomkers
Raceway begins a nine week long "Sunday Summer Concerts" on July 1, 2012.

These are some of the acts, which are scheduled to perform outdoors on the racetrack's apron before 1000 concertgoers:

Pat Benatar, Frankie Avalon, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Village People, TheCoasters, The Platters, The Drifters are expected to entertain the crowds in attendance.

CLARE WEISS EMERGING ARTIST AWARD

The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s Art in the Parks program announced that Katherine Daniels is the 2012 recipient of the Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award. Ornamental Paths, a site-specific weaving installation inspired by the signature Art Deco residential buildings that line the Grand Concourse, will border the central and northern pathways in Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx. This vibrant take on the Bronx’s historical architecture will be on view through June 2013. The $7,000 award is granted annually in memory of Clare Weiss, Parks’ Curator of Public Art from 2005 to 2009.

The NYC Department of Health will be conducting aerial larviciding for mosquitoes to help prevent West Nile Virus in marsh and non-residential areas between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM on 6/11, 6/12, and 6/13. West Nile virus was first identified in 1937 in Uganda in eastern Africa. It was first discovered in the United States in the summer of 1999 in New York. Since then, the virus has spread throughout the United States.

Today is the National Puerto Rican Parade. The annual mega-fiesta this year celebrates Puerto Ricans and Higher Education. It is through education that the community can continue to progress. Higher education is a source of empowerment that greatly improves the social and financial conditions of individuals aspiring to better their lives.
