La La Land Hype?

Is La La Land really all its Hyped Up to Be? Damien Chazelle’s La La Land has been nominated for 14 Oscars, we all heard this morning as the Oscars live streamed their nomination picks. https://youtu.be/SAqyTP1LOxo

But is it really worth all the hype it’s been generating? First things first, the trailer does not do the film justice; but that being said I generally liked the movie. Was it in the same caliber as Titanic and All About Eve, the only two other movies ever attaining 14 nominations? Well, that’s what I’m about to start hashing out.

Economic Forecast

If the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were not limited to the Mediterranean region, the Great Wall of China would likely make the list. The one that made later lists was mostly built in and after the 14th century but prior walls were built as far back as 200BC. Defending against Mongol raids was the most obvious purpose but trade and immigration control were also reasons why the Han Dynasty built the early earthen barriers so that workers and goods were accounted for and taxed.

Alternative Facts?

Submitted by Admin on

Communism, capitalism, change and chaos all begin with C but they communicate different messages.

What does this have to do with alternative facts? Well, it is absurd that elected officials and their spokespersons insist on presenting unsubstantiated information as alternative facts when it is false government propaganda. Donald Trump rose to power on alternative facts, some of the most malignant in US history. Although he lost the popular vote, he was victorious with the count of US Electoral College.

It's not uncommon throughout history for governments to do what they can to control the message. Is that done in a benign way because they're trying to get more information to the public, or is it done with hidden motivations making sure one message is seen in the best light? As President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence’s first official week in office begins, we will just have to wait and see what develops. However, after a few days, we hear alternative fact that reality is whatever they say it is.

In the meantime, it suffices to say that the press reports the news, and editorials are the platform to share views. While many dictatorships began by attacking the media, not acknowledging the truth, and suppressing opposing points of view. These are all contrary to an independent press, which is crucial to any democracy. Please note that Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba. North Korea, Russia are among nations that have a monopoly spewing government propaganda.

While I was teaching journalism in Indiana, then governor Mike Pence's who was considering a run for the White House gained attention for his efforts to establish a state-run news service alternative. He lost support for the idea but is apparently still interested.

However, another one of my previous employers, The Voice of America is a US government-run media which already exists within our federal government. VOA is funded with our tax dollars and VOA was only allowed to broadcast outside the USA, but that is no longer the case.

No one should be surprised The Trump-Pence administration is moving to outflank independent media. Trump's successful social media campaign as a political candidate and the expansive new, in-house operation to discredit independent media are aimed at bypassing news outlets and directly reach the public to circumvent the press.

This alternative information will be available ahead of any other news outlet and exclusive coverage should be an issue for grave concern. So is the administration's decision to turn news conferences into infomercials so they do not have to answer difficult questions.

As if mother nature was sending a warning to The United States, a powerful storm is responsible for killing more than a dozen so far as violent weather leave a trail of destruction.

A strengthening storm system will move from the Southeast U.S. to off the Mid-Atlantic Coast by Monday evening. This storm will bring soaking rains and strong winds to much of the Eastern Seaboard through Tuesday. Interior sections of the Northeast could receive significant snow. Nestled in LA is a special trendy restaurant a short ride away called Horse's Mouth, with a new location coming soon.

These past Christmas holidays were huge because I enjoyed time with my kids and grandchildren, and also because it was the start of a new era heralded by delightful meals and sights rarely seen in The City of Angels. Hungry people joyfully waiting in line for the privilege of entering this special restaurant. Yes, It's definitely worth the ride just to emerge into a modern, unassuming eatery with a natural decor background and an equally noteworthy menu.

Demagoguery Films For US

There was once was a pompous leader who gained support by appealing to the popular desires and prejudices of every man rather than by using rational argument.

Some called him a rabble-rouser, others a political agitator, a soapbox orator, a firebrand, fomenter, or phony provocateur. But at the end, he tricked enough people who didn't realize they had been fooled.
In ancient Greece and Rome, these leaders or orators espoused the cause of the common people.
