A white man started shooting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston during a prayer meeting last night, killing nine people, including the pastor. Authorities are describing this as a hate crime of 3 men and six women.

DEMOCRATIZING DEBATES

A Report of the Annenberg Working Group on Presidential Campaign Debate Reform. Democratizing the Debates
Philadelphia: Annenberg Center, 6/15 http://www.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org/democratizing-the-debates/

The Annenberg Debate Reform Working Group has presented this analysis and related recommendations in the service of Presidential debates that reflect major changes in our electorate, politics and media. More can and should be done to enrich their content, enlarge their audience and improve upon their accessibility. The members of the Working Group are confident that while views about the particulars will vary, there is likely near‑unanimity about the vital importance of Presidential debates and, therefore, of the need to ensure that they continue to answer the needs of the voters who have watched and listened to them, and to draw into our political process those who have not.

AMERICAN MIGRANT CRISIS

Submitted by ub on

Following last year's surge of unaccompanied minor migrants from Central America that set off alarms in the United States, Mexico is now detaining more Central Americans than the United States, according to government data analyzed by the research and advocacy organization Washington Office on Latin America.

This shift becomes apparent when combining data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexico’s National Institute for Migration for the first seven months of fiscal year 2015. Between October 2014 and April 2015, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol detained 70,448 “Other than Mexican” citizens at its border. The overwhelming majority of these were Central Americans, but we do not yet know exactly how many. During this same period, Mexican authorities detained 92,889 Central Americans in Mexico.

These numbers are striking. They show that the so-called ‘surge’ of 2014 hasn’t really ended. Enormous numbers of Central Americans are still fleeing, but most of them are now getting caught in Mexico instead of the United States. This means it’s just as urgent as it was last year to address the violence and poverty driving Central American migration. But Mexico’s aggressive efforts against migrants have masked the sense of urgency that we should be feeling here in the United States about Central America’s humanitarian crisis.

MAGNA CARTA

The great charter turns 800 years old today. It established the principle that no man was above the law not even the king. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE. President, Prime Ministers, Politicians, Police, Bosses, Condo Boards...etc.

This charter is revered as a cornerstone of democracy, with famous principles such as the right to justice and a fair trial stemming from its inception.

With only four of the original copies from 1215 in existence, and as you can imagine is priceless and holds powerful words. In 2007, a somewhat younger copy from 1297 sold for $21.3 million at auction.
