October 15 until December 7 is the window of opportunity and the official countdown for you to chose Medicare. After that period, you may be locked into your current plan until 2015.

Whether you have original Medicare, Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, this is your opportunity to make any changes you desire.

This opportunity is Medicare's open enrollment period, which is also known as the Medicare Annual Election Period.

Any changes you make to your Medicare selections will not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2014

The international population appears to be aging at a faster rate than ever before. Officials predict that before the year 2050, senior citizens will outnumber teenagers. Who will care for the old? If trends are a good indicator, then unfortunately the answer to that question is no one.

To add to this alarming situation, it appears that many countries have not prepared an infrastructure to deal with their growing populations of older people, according to the United Nations and an elder care group.

Some experts are now predicting panic if our lawmakers do not reach a solution to their self produced crisis.
There are indications that these so called leaders are considering kicking the can down the line, rather than preventing a possible catastrophic meltdown, if the US government falls into default as a result of the debt crisis.

SAFE FACEBOOK?

There is nowhere to hide on Facebook. The social media giant plans to finalize the removal of the privacy setting that allows users to control who can search their name.

The company first rolled out its plans to eliminate the service in December 2012. Last year’s privacy-policy update ditched the security setting for members who were not using it, but now those who have the filter enabled have nowhere to hide.

This decision is part of an effort to enhance Facebook's search feature, which included an upgrade to the Social Graph to allow users to search almost anything.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2013 is to be awarded to the
Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical
Weapons (OPCW) for its extensive efforts to eliminate
chemical weapons.

During World War One, chemical weapons were used to a considerable degree.

The Geneva Convention of 1925 prohibited the use, but not the production or storage, of chemical weapons.

City Island Images is once again proud to announce the winners of this year's City Island Society of Clam-diggers and Mussel-suckers. This annual award is given each and every year to any and all exemplary City Island community citizens, who receive the most votes and highest community support.

This year's award recipients are the late and great Bob Branizza and Ed Sadler.
