In City Island, NY the electricity was back on and then quickly went off less than two hours earlier today. WARNING DRIVERS: Some City Islanders were lining up for hours at the pump to get gas. NYC officials are asking to please stay away from city beaches and waterways.

ConEdison says they are working on this and many other areas after many downed trees have cause power failures all over the area.

ConEd says the water damage to the substation on 14th Street and Avenue C in lower Manhattan dims the outlook for restoring power to areas that have lost it.

THE INTERNET

The idea of the Internet started in the early 1960’s. J.C.R. Licklider, an MIT student, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962. He then moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency later in 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Kleinrock, another student at MIT, developed the theory of packet switching. This was to form the basis of the Internet. In 1965, another student at MIT named Lawrence Roberts connected a computer in Massachusetts to a computer in California over dial-up telephone lines.

Super-storm Sandy has wreaked havoc on City Island, where a fire brought out over 100 firefighters to fight flames, while dealing with strong winds and heavy rain at a popular waterside restaurant. Fire destroyed Tony's Pier Restaurant.

FDNY reports that it took four hours to contain the three-alarm blaze because of Sandy's severe weather. Downed trees and branches also blocked firefighters' path to the island. No injuries were immediately reported.
