The NYC Department of Health will be conducting aerial larviciding for mosquitoes to help prevent West Nile Virus in marsh and non-residential areas between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM on 6/11, 6/12, and 6/13. Aerial larviciding will occur in the following Bronx zip codes: 10464 and 10475. For more information and rain dates, go to http://www.nyc.gov/doh or call 311 for details.

West Nile virus was first identified in 1937 in Uganda in eastern Africa. It was first discovered in the United States in the summer of 1999 in New York. Since then, the virus has spread throughout the United States.

Today is the National Puerto Rican Parade. The annual mega-fiesta this year celebrates Puerto Ricans and Higher Education. It is through education that the community can continue to progress. Higher education is a source of empowerment that greatly improves the social and financial conditions of individuals aspiring to better their lives. The Parade's theme will showcase the educational achievements of Puerto Ricans and continue to encourage further growth.

Prescription Drug Abuse Town Hall

There is a Town Hall Forum being held on prescription drug abuse, which dovetails nicely with the City Island drug problem often discussed at Civic Association meetings. Each spring Montefiore holds a public forum on a health-related topic of concern to the community.

These annual forums consist of panelists who are experts in the topic covered. They make presentations, field questions, and provide contact info for those who want help or more info on the topic.

City Island Images is proud to announce tours of City Island and surrounding areas.

Our small tour groups will meet @ the last stop on the #6 SUBWAY, Pelham Bay Station. We will then take the #29 Bus to City Island, where we will begin our journey. Depending on the tour and dates, our stops will include Pelham Cemetery, City Island Historical Society/Museum, The Old Schoolhouse, PS 175, Yacht Clubs, Restaurants, Galleries, Shoppes, Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park, Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum. We will finish at the end of City Island Avenue and return to Pelham Bay Station #6 SUBWAY.

While you are reading this article, at the very same time there are folks on City Island and all over New York City, NY State, USA and the entire world being watched by various surveillance cameras. These can be found in public locations, as well as private spaces.

At some intersections with cameras, the number of car crashes have decreased, this according to AAA. Older camera systems, like the ones being utilized in New York City only provide still images, but their images are compelling nonetheless.
